What is VITA?
VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. This program offers no-cost tax filing services to working individuals and families with household income of $66,000 or less. VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, is a program that provides free tax preparation help to qualifying community members. Each VITA location is staffed by trained, experienced, IRS-certified volunteers who provide free income tax return preparation and E-Filing to help Collier County’s taxpayers receive their tax refunds and improve financial stability.
During the 2019 tax season, preparers completed 559 filings, totaling $828,300 in returns, and saving an additional $100,061 in filing fees. These refunds are used to bolster savings, pay back loans, cover home and transportation costs, and buy groceries. Approximately $305,000 of those refunds come from the Earned Income Tax Credit which puts money back in the pockets of working families and is one of the most effective anti-poverty measures in our tax code. Multiple studies have found that credits like the EITC can be life-changing for families that live paycheck-to-paycheck.
