Girl Scouts of Gulf Coast Florida: Volunteer Spotlight
Troop Leader Helen Sundgren has never been a stranger to Girl Scouting. She began her journey as a Girl Scout herself in Oklahoma. She went on to serve in the Navy as a JAG attorney, achieving the rank of Captain. Upon her retirement from the Navy, Helen contacted Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, saying she wanted to exchange her Navy uniform for a Girl Scout uniform. Since that time, Helen has been unstoppable!
Since 2003, Helen has given more than 75 girls from the River Park and Anthony Park areas an opportunity to be Girl Scouts through the fully funded Community Troop program. She’s made sure the girls have everything they needed and provided transportation for them to go to attend resident summer camp. Recently, she and her troop instigated the presentation of a plaque honoring PFC Charlie C. Anthony, the Vietnam Veteran who grew up in their neighborhood, for whom the park where they meet is named.
Helen continues to encourage and support girls from her troop who are now in college. She recently helped one college student whose mother passed away move into a new apartment and is even helping her to secure her citizenship. Helen has had a remarkably profound impact on the girls in the River Park and Anthony Park communities. Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida couldn’t be more proud to have her as a volunteer!
